step 6

were entirely ready to have god remove all of these defects of character.

this is one of the faster of the dozen steps. it asks us to review our resentments after having discerned our part in it, and then list our character defects. just a small thing, no? no. and not easy to do objectively either. but it must be done. we have to know as many of our shortcomings as is possible. then we can ask to have them removed in the next step. but here, we must be diligent. click post title to learn more about step 6. it is said here: the inventory is our defects, not our incidents.

does this sound familiar?... i'll bet it does...

Okay Warrior Scout--I have been sober since 1984. I've long stopped white knuckling it, though slippery thinking does pop up. I have to tell you (don't let this be discouraging, please), having God take away the resentments and bad memories which have kept me awake and in knots, has only recently come to fruition. I mean, giving away is far different than believing it's given. Yet, all of a sudden, the power of past screwed up thoughts is dead.

It's great you have this wonderful blog to work through all your changes.

staggo- wow! what a really long time! i won't begin to tell you what life was like for me in '84. anyway, i am not discouraged in the least. i'm discovering that recovery (which is more than sobriety) is a process. it requires maintenance, which is what i try to do with the blog. it is a way for me to reach others in a safe and quiet way and work on my shit in the same fashion. i have become a counselor and so it's not so easy for me to go to 12step rooms without seeing clients. and i think what you were writing about is having faith. having faith that god will remove my defects of character. well, you know the saying: faith without works is dead. thanks for reading...keep coming back!

I'm nodding in agreement. Recovery is more than just being clean and sober.
