so my friend mike and i have been chuckling about living in colorado since we have met. we are both from further east and we find some of the local habits and traditions to be strange to us. we lovingly refer to the homesteads and the prairies and the ranches. here is a new one we can add to our repertoire. and we also think it's funny because some of the 12-step fellowships seem to be distinctly into their own membership base and don't really understand the concept of collaboration. and when a new person in recovery stumbles into one of their rooms, their reception may be less than completely warm if they happen to share that they are an addict or a drunk in the other fellowship.
and when i put some thought to it, some of the treatment providers around the city each have their own bubble they live in. and if they are publicly funded, they can easily (and sometimes do) start to resent other likeminded agencies because they are competing for the same dollars. it can cause for lack of proper referrals, for streamlining services to meet everyone's needs in lieu of the individual's, etc. anyway, this is just a sweet way to point out some of the futility and the counterintuitive qualities of those attitudes. to quote rodney king "couldn't we all just get along?"
btw- the rocky mountain roundup is committed to be inclusive of all 12 step traditions including AA, CA, NA, CMA, MA, SA, SLA, OA, GA, etc. so come check out the roundup this August 3-5 in Winter Park..... Recovery Happens! especially for gay and lesbian folks! time to celebrate! glbt folks should stick together! so, come out and play with us at the rocky mountain roundup this year.. it'll be a kick!!!!
