day of silence april 16 2010

GUEST POST FROM THE ACLU:

Two things I’ve learned over the years that I’ve worked with LGBT students at the American Civil Liberties Union are that many school administrators and teachers don’t have the slightest clue about what their students’ legal rights are, and that a lot of the ones who do know go right ahead and violate students’ rights anyway because they think they can get away with it.
The only way to be sure that your school will respect and uphold your legal rights is for YOU to educate yourself about what your rights are and hold your school to its responsibility to protect and enforce them.
That’s never more true than during the Day of Silence, an annual event designed to bring attention to the bullying, harassment, and name-calling LGBT students often experience in school. Here are four things you need to know about your rights as you mark Day of Silence this year on Friday, April 16.

oh my goth

i thought i'd do something a little more lighthearted today. i regularly visit java's site and she had a little blog amusement posted and when i researched it i found a plethora of blogthings that are just for that: amusement

this one is "what's your goth name" so i am gonna post this one today. hopefully you will all play.

Your Goth Name is:

Vladimir Dystopia

mine is vladymir dystopia.... i like the sound of that.

in case you're not sure about goth- you can check the wikipedia here

and maybe i'll ask you to answer a couple of small questions today, too.

1) what is your favorite memory of anything goth? (mine is running an after-hours club in chicago and encountering goth wanna-be teens. several of them had rats for pets and carried them around on their shoulders. it was so adorable and very surreal.

2) who is your favorite goth character- alive or dead/ real or fictional? (i really think edward scissorhands is my favorite goth character. i mean, i loved syd and nancy, but i think they were just a bit pre-goth. besides edward could really trim a mean bush) lol.

and here's my favorite song from the best known goth band of the last century....lyrics here

it's the most wonderful time to be queer

damn, i missed this show yeserday and i am totally disappointed. charles phoenix puts together these shots that are totally wacky and retro, extremely fun, and engaging. he will be in phoenix on dec 4 and in la the 17th thru the 19th. i encourage any readers living in those cities to consider taking in his work. the holidays are most definitely challenging, but there are so many great things about them too. being silly, reviving campy in my life, and having another reason to practice kindness are just a couple i can list. for me, it is indeed, a wonderful time to be alive.

here's charles phoenix's link if you would like further information.

and now a nod to johnny mathis. when i was a very young boy, my mother used to have a couple of his albums, and i remember hearing those songs many times during my boyhood around the house. and it doesn't matter to me how he defines himself. he's of a different generation and lived under a different agreement field. i am thrilled however that so many queer men are not required to lead two lives without losing their livelihoods. i know many of them do anyway, but it's not a requirement today as it was in the 50's and 60's. but johnny may have been queer when queer wasn't cool.

gay top gun

i know this has been around, but it still makes me smile. the enthusiasm that q shows near the end shrieking "swordfight! swordfight! swordfight!" still makes me ooze with laughter.

just a short list of some of the more vague lines from the film:

Hey man we could of had him! Hey we could of had him man!

I was invaded!

Move your ass get up here! I'm engaged!

Woods been hit! Woods been hit, shit, Woods been hit!

Ok Wood I'm taking the lead

You up for this one Maverick?

No, no, no - there's two O's in Goose boys!

Okay Mav, lets turn and burn!

We're in his Jet Wash!

He's going vertical, then so am I!

Get your butts above the hard deck.

I'm not going to sit here and blow sunshine up your ass.

Bullshit ten minutes! This thing will be over in two minutes - get on it!

Hard deck my ass, we nailed that son of a bitch!

Splash that sucker, yeah!

'Goose whose butt did you kiss to get in here?'... 'The list is long but distinguished'

"You can be my wingman anytime".... "Bullshit, you can be mine"

I want somebody's butt, I want it now, I've had it!
